President Kim Dae-jung held a summit meeting with Malaysia's Prime Minister Mohamed Mahathir, Thursday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the presidential office at Cheong Wa Dae. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in bilateral trade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], information and technology,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as in the war against terrorism. They also agreed to work together to develop the Association of South East Asian Nations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or ASEAN + 3 (Korea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], China and Japan) meeting into an East Asian summit.
During the discussion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], President requested that Prime Minister Mahathir give consideration to allow more Korean businesses to take part in large construction programs such as dams and bridges, and IT related projects in Malaysia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). In reply Mahathir asked Seoul to strive for advanced cooperative relations in the field of cutting edge industries such as IT as the two countries have developed into top 10 trade partners since 1995.
On the side lines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Presidential Special Advisor on Foreign Relations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], National Security and Unification Lim Dong-won explained the current inter-Korean relations after his visit to North Korea and Mahathir expressed his willingness to support policy on the North after reviewing the South Korean government��s efforts for inter-Korean peace and cooperation.
Prime Minister Mahathir arrived in Seoul,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Wednesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for a three-day visit at the invitation of President Kim. The Malaysian leader was last in Korea in 1990.
